Momentum Stocks 2026: Best Stocks Ranked by Price Strength

A current momentum stocks list ranked by price strength, relative strength, 50-day and 200-day trend confirmation, and return earned per unit of volatility.

Momentum investing starts from price behavior: which stocks keep making higher relative progress, hold above important trend lines, and deliver strong returns without excessive short-term volatility? This momentum stocks ranking starts with the Liquid North Atlantic universe, then scores each company across total return momentum, relative strength, 50-day and 200-day trend confirmation, and risk-adjusted momentum before the simulated strategy selects a concentrated 25-stock portfolio.

Momentum Stocks List: Price Strength, Relative Strength, and Trend Confirmation

Searches for momentum stocks, best momentum stocks, top momentum stocks, and high momentum stocks are usually looking for current market leadership rather than a textbook definition. This ranking is not a buy list, but it gives a current research shortlist built from trailing total returns, relative price strength, moving-average confirmation, and volatility-aware momentum.

The model is deliberately price-led. It does not start by asking whether a company is cheap or fundamentally high quality. Instead, it asks whether the stock's recent return path is strong enough, broad enough across time windows, confirmed by the 50-day and 200-day moving averages, and not purely the result of high short-term volatility.

For investors searching for a momentum stock screener or relative strength stocks, the useful distinction is ranking versus filtering. A simple screener can show stocks above a moving average or near a 52-week high. This page ranks the full liquid universe so the strongest combinations of price momentum, relative strength, trend, and risk-adjusted momentum rise to the top.

Universe

This strategy uses the Liquid North Atlantic universe, then compares stocks by absolute momentum, relative strength, trend confirmation, and risk-adjusted momentum. The benchmark is MSCI Momentum (MTUM:USA).

Position Sizing

The simulated portfolio targets 25 long positions at about 4% each and rebalances every 4 weeks. A 30% buy constraint lets each purchase flex around the target weight, and immediate buyback is disabled.

Buy Rules

New buys must rank at or above 95, have positive six-month total return, trade above the 200-day moving average, and keep sector weight below 30%. Those rules keep the strategy focused on current, liquid trend leadership without letting one sector dominate new purchases.

Sell Rules

Holdings are sold when their rank falls below 85 or when price closes below the 200-day moving average. The wider sell threshold gives winners room to consolidate while still removing broken trends.

Trading Costs

Trades fill at the average of the next high, low, and twice the close, with $0.005 per share commission and no management fee. Variable slippage is included, and the model does not use margin.

Bias Controls

The backtest uses point-in-time data with preliminary fundamentals excluded and historical constituents included. That means each rebalance only sees data that would have been available at the time, reducing look-ahead and survivorship bias.

About these models

These are illustrative backtests, not portfolios to copy. They show how a hypothetical strategy built on the ranking might have behaved after rebalancing rules, trading costs, timing, and position sizing are layered on top. Results are not actual trading returns, not investment advice, and do not guarantee future performance. We validate that each ranking can sort stocks within its universe in a historically useful way, but a good ranking can still lead to better or worse outcomes once it becomes a tradable model.

This momentum stocks list is built for investors researching price leadership. It favors stocks with strong intermediate and one-year returns, relative strength, moving-average confirmation, and healthier return-to-volatility profiles.

Each stock is scored from 0 to 100 across total return momentum, relative momentum, trend confirmation, and risk-adjusted momentum. Higher block scores are better. The final score is the weighted blend of those blocks.

Ranking System

Every stock in the universe is scored 0 to 100 across four composites: total return momentum, relative momentum, trend confirmation, and risk-adjusted momentum. The factor scores roll up into the block scores in the table above, and the weighted total drives the final rank for this momentum stocks list.

Total Return Momentum45% weight

  • One Year Total Return
  • Six Month Total Return
  • Three Month Total Return

Relative Momentum25% weight

Measures price performance relative to peers or the market across 52-week, 26-week, and 13-week windows.

  • 52 Week Relative Price Change
  • 26 Week Relative Price Change
  • 13 Week Relative Price Change

Trend Confirmation20% weight

Checks whether price is above major moving averages and whether the 50-day moving average is above the 200-day moving average.

  • Price Versus 200 Day SMA
  • 50 Day SMA Versus 200 Day SMA
  • Price Versus 50 Day SMA

Momentum Stocks FAQ

What are momentum stocks?

Momentum stocks are companies whose share prices have been outperforming over recent intermediate-term periods. This ranking focuses on price strength, relative strength, trend confirmation, and return earned per unit of recent volatility.

What are the best momentum stocks right now?

The table highlights the current top 500 momentum stocks from the latest published strategy snapshot. It is a ranked research shortlist, not a personal recommendation or a guaranteed list of stocks to buy.

Is this a momentum stock screener?

Yes, but it is a ranked screener rather than a simple filter. Every stock in the universe receives a 0 to 100 score across price momentum, relative strength, trend confirmation, and risk-adjusted momentum, then the table sorts the strongest combinations first.

How does this momentum stock ranking work?

The ranking uses the Liquid North Atlantic universe, then scores stocks across total return momentum, relative momentum, trend confirmation, and risk-adjusted momentum. The simulated strategy buys stocks above rank 95 and sells holdings below rank 85 or below the 200-day moving average.

What makes a high momentum stock?

In this ranking, a high momentum stock has strong total returns across several recent windows, favorable relative strength versus the broader universe, price above major moving averages, and better return relative to recent volatility.

Why does the strategy require positive six-month returns?

The buy rule Ret6M%Chg > 0 avoids adding stocks whose longer intermediate-term momentum is still negative, even if a shorter bounce temporarily improves their rank.

Why use moving averages in a momentum strategy?

Moving-average checks help separate persistent price trends from noisy returns. The ranking rewards price above the 50-day and 200-day averages, and the strategy exits when price falls below the 200-day average.

How many stocks does the momentum strategy hold?

The simulated strategy targets 25 long positions with 4% static weights, rebalanced every 4 weeks. Sector weight is capped below 30% for new buys.

Is MTUM the benchmark?

Yes. The backtest compares the simulated Momentum Stocks strategy with MSCI Momentum (MTUM:USA), while the ranking itself starts from the broader Liquid North Atlantic universe.

Are momentum stocks risky?

Yes. Momentum can reverse quickly, crowding can unwind, and high-ranking stocks can still be overvalued or exposed to company-specific risk. This page is a research tool, not financial advice.
