Overview
Intel remains the x86 client and server CPU volume leader, but its share continues to narrow. Mercury Research put Q2 2026 x86 client unit share at 69.7% and broad server unit share at 65.5%. The main moat is x86 software compatibility, shared with AMD. Intel also owns scarce leading-edge manufacturing and packaging capability, while Mobileye brings automotive design-ins and mapping data. These assets have not yet produced a proven external foundry franchise: Q2 foundry external revenue was $293M and the segment lost $2.089B. Intel 18A-P entered risk production in June, and RAMP-C completion adds government validation, but commercial customer scale remains limited. AMD, Nvidia, Arm and custom silicon pressure pricing, share and capital allocation; process yield and external customer wins are the critical tests.
