Overview
Abbott is a diversified healthcare company spanning medical devices, diagnostics, nutrition and established pharmaceuticals. Its strongest moats are recurring sensors and assays around Libre and diagnostic instrument installed bases, laboratory workflow integration, and multi-year WIC contracts in pediatric nutrition. The March 23, 2026 Exact Sciences acquisition adds cancer screening and precision-oncology diagnostics, but acquisition scale alone is not a moat. Device and formula regulation is shared by qualified competitors and is therefore not scored separately. Libre's recurring-sensor advantage is below maximum because payers can change formularies and patients can switch platforms; the stale third-party CGM share and HHI estimates are removed. Cardiovascular and neuromodulation retain only narrower training and asset-specific IP claims.

Erosion risks
- Generic substitution
- Government price controls and tendering
- Local competition and parallel imports
Leading indicators
- Key Emerging Markets sales growth
- Price/mix vs volume decomposition in segment
- Gross margin trend in segment
Counterarguments
- Many products face low differentiation and price-led competition
- Government tenders can rapidly shift volume to the lowest bidder
